The Elk River rises in Pocahontas and Randolph counties and flows about 170 miles through Webster, Braxton, Clay and Kanawha counties to the Kanawha River at Charleston. The upper Elk near Slatyfork holds one of the best wild trout fisheries in West Virginia, and the tailwater below Sutton Dam is stocked year round. The Elk River Trail follows the lower valley on a former rail line.
