Where to stay for birding near New River
The New River enters West Virginia from Virginia near Bluestone Lake and flows north about 80 miles to Gauley Bridge, where it joins the Gauley to form the Kanawha. Its lower 53 miles through Fayette, Raleigh and Summers counties are protected as New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. The Upper New below Hinton is a float and smallmouth fishery, while the Lower New below Thurmond is the state whitewater run most first-time rafters take.
