The South Branch Potomac River flows north about 140 miles from Highland County, Virginia through Pendleton, Grant, Hardy and Hampshire counties to meet the North Branch near Green Spring. It cuts three gorges in West Virginia, including Smoke Hole Canyon and the Trough below Moorefield. It is one of the best smallmouth bass rivers in the state and supports canoe outfitters at Petersburg, Moorefield and Romney.
