The Potomac River forms the northern border of West Virginia from the Fairfax Stone east to Harpers Ferry, separating the state from Maryland. In the Eastern Panhandle it is a wide flatwater river with rapids at Harpers Ferry, and the C&O Canal towpath runs along the Maryland bank. Harpers Ferry, Shepherdstown and Great Cacapon are the main West Virginia access points.
