Matewan is a town in Mingo County on the Tug Fork, across from Kentucky. The Matewan Massacre, a May 1920 gunfight between miners and Baldwin-Felts detectives that opened the West Virginia mine wars, took place on its main street, and bullet holes remain in the surviving buildings. The West Virginia Mine Wars Museum is downtown and the Hatfield-McCoy feud sites are within a few miles.

Matewan Historic District
The Tug Fork town where the May 19, 1920 Matewan Massacre took place during the mine wars. Bullet holes remain in a downtown wall and the floodwall carries interpretive murals.
