Moundsville is the seat of Marshall County, with about 8,100 residents, on the Ohio River, a short drive south of Wheeling. It is named for the Grave Creek Mound, a 62-foot Adena burial mound built between roughly 250 and 150 BC. The former West Virginia Penitentiary stands across the street from the mound and runs daily tours, and the Palace of Gold at New Vrindaban is a short drive east.

West Virginia Penitentiary
A Gothic Revival prison in Moundsville built starting in 1866 and closed in 1995. It now runs daytime history tours and overnight paranormal investigations.

Palace of Gold
A gilded and marble temple built by devotees at the New Vrindaban community near Moundsville, opened in 1979. Rose gardens and guided tours operate through the warm months.

Wheeling Suspension Bridge
An 1849 suspension bridge over the Ohio River at Wheeling, the longest in the world when it opened at 1,010 feet. It is a National Historic Landmark and carried the National Road.

A 2,000 acre municipal resort park in Wheeling with a lodge, cottages, golf courses, a zoo and gardens. Its Winter Festival of Lights runs from November into early January.
