Romney is the seat of Hampshire County, with about 1,800 residents, and claims to be the oldest town in West Virginia, chartered in 1762 alongside Shepherdstown. It is on the South Branch of the Potomac at the junction of US 50 and US 220. The Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad runs excursions north from town through the Trough, a river gorge where bald eagles nest.
