The C&O Canal National Historical Park runs 184.5 miles along the Maryland bank of the Potomac River from Washington, DC to Cumberland, and its towpath faces the West Virginia shore for much of the Eastern Panhandle. Travelers cross to it at Harpers Ferry, Shepherdstown and Williamsport. It is a flat crushed-stone path used for cycling, running and long-distance touring, and it connects to the Great Allegheny Passage at Cumberland.
