Canaan Valley is a high bowl-shaped valley in Tucker County with a floor near 3,200 feet, the highest valley of its size east of the Mississippi. It holds the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, one of the largest wetland complexes in the central Appalachians, plus Canaan Valley Resort State Park, Timberline Mountain and White Grass Ski Touring Center. Davis is a short drive north, Thomas is eight, and Blackwater Falls State Park is a short drive northwest.

Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge
The 500th national wildlife refuge, established in 1994 to protect the wetlands of Canaan Valley at about 3,200 feet. It holds the largest inland wetland complex in the central Appalachians.

Blackwater Falls
A 57 foot falls on the Blackwater River near Davis, tannin-stained amber by hemlock and spruce needles. A boardwalk of over 200 steps drops to the viewing platforms.

Lindy Point
A rock platform reached by a half mile trail in Blackwater Falls State Park, looking down the Blackwater Canyon. It faces west and is the standard sunset overlook in Tucker County.

Bear Rocks Preserve
A Nature Conservancy preserve at the northern end of Dolly Sods where sandstone outcrops sit on the edge of the Allegheny Front. The drop east toward Petersburg is roughly 2,500 feet.
