Alderson is a town that straddles the Greenbrier and Monroe county line on the Greenbrier River. Its 1914 steel-truss Memorial Bridge is closed to cars and used as a pedestrian crossing between the two halves of town. The Greenbrier River Trail ends about 3 miles upstream at North Caldwell, and Hinton is well under an hour west.

The largest falls on the New River, spanning about 1,500 feet and dropping 10 to 25 feet across several channels. A boardwalk from River Road north of Hinton reaches the islands at the lip.
