Monroe is the only West Virginia county with no traffic light and no four-lane highway. Lewisburg is well under an hour north and Peterstown and the Virginia line are a short drive south.

The Greenbrier
A resort at White Sulphur Springs operating on the site of a mineral spring resort dating to 1778, with the present hotel opened in 1913. It holds three championship golf courses and a National Historic Landmark designation.
