Philippi is the seat of Barbour County, with about 2,700 residents, on the Tygart Valley River. Its covered bridge, built in 1852, carries US 250 across the river and is one of the few covered bridges in the country still on a federal highway. The first land battle of the Civil War was fought here on June 3, 1861, and Alderson Broaddus University is above the town.
