When it gets busy
| Event | When | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Bridge Day | Third Saturday in October | Bridge Day is one of the busiest weekends of the year around the New River Gorge, and lodging near Fayetteville books far in advance. |
| Gauley Season | Scheduled dam releases on about six consecutive weekends starting the weekend after Labor Day | Release weekends fill rafting-outpost lodging, campgrounds and cabins across Nicholas and Fayette counties, often booked a year out by returning groups. |
| Fall Foliage | Peaks in the high country in early October and in the lower valleys in mid to late October | October is the highest-occupancy month of the year statewide, and it overlaps Bridge Day, the Forest Festival and Gauley releases. |
| Leaf Peeping Weekends | Weekends through October | October weekends fill quickly, especially Friday and Saturday nights, while Sunday nights are usually easier to find. |
| Ramp Season | Ramp dinners and feeds through April | Demand is modest and spread across small towns rather than concentrated, but it fills the limited rooms in Richwood, Elkins and Marlinton on dinner weekends. |
| Summer Holiday Weekends | Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day each year | Three-night minimums are near universal and campgrounds at Summersville, Bluestone, Stonewall and Tygart lakes book months ahead. |
