The Tygart Valley River rises in Randolph County and flows north about 135 miles through Barbour, Taylor and Marion counties to join the West Fork at Fairmont and form the Monongahela. It is dammed at Grafton to create Tygart Lake and drops over wide ledges at Valley Falls State Park. Whitewater sections above the lake are run by expert boaters at high water.

Valley Falls State Park
A series of ledge falls and rapids on the Tygart Valley River between Fairmont and Grafton, on the site of a 19th century mill town. Trails and picnic shelters line the rock shelf above the water.

Tygart Dam
A concrete gravity dam on the Tygart Valley River near Grafton, completed in 1938 as one of the first Army Corps flood control projects in the Ohio basin. Tygart Lake State Park is on the reservoir above it.
